Yale Secondary
Application Question

Please use this space to write an essay in which you discuss your interest in Yale School of Medicine. (500 words)

Responses to this question will vary according to each individual’s interests, needs, etc.

There isn’t necessarily a better response as there are so many potential opportunities, qualities, and resources available at this institution that may be uniquely aligned with one’s goals.

However, it is first important to at least understand how the curriculum at Yale differs from other institutions and consider that in response to this question.

While this is not exclusive to Yale, as other medical schools have a similar requirement, every M.D. student must complete a thesis that represents a substantial body of original research. Students are encouraged to explore their own interests in medicine and advance at their own pace.

It is for this reason that about half of all students complete the M.D. program in four years, and half take an optional, tuition-free fifth year to pursue additional clinical electives, thesis-related research, or international medical experiences.

Several students each year pursue dual-degree programs with other Yale schools and departments. If this is an attractive consideration for an applicant, then it could be beneficial to include specific details in the response such as the name of a department, program, and faculty member engaged in specific research or other endeavors with whom you would like to collaborate (and how).

This is just one example of providing a more detailed response to this question. Be advised that as this question is relatively broad, it is easy to provide a superficial answer about the institution’s prestige, and simply list various resources available there.

That is a simple and obvious answer that does not do much to emphasize your insight about and interest in this institution.
